How to set passwords that keep you safer

Follow these simple rules to strengthen your first line of cyber defence.

As life gets more ‘digital’, most people have an endless number of online accounts to manage. Which means more login and password details to remember too!

The big problem is most people re-use the same password (or a variation) across all their accounts. This might be convenient, but it’s also risky - like having the same key to your car, house, office, letter box and personal safe.

If a criminal gets hold of one key, they gain access to everything!

5 ways to improve password security.

Don’t use personal information.

Don’t use passwords that contain personal information – especially if you’re active on social media. Plus be mindful of sharing other information too - if you use your pet’s name as your password, don’t share it!

Keep passwords secure

If you’re worried about forgetting different passwords, use a password manager. These apps are like an online safe that only you have the code for – i.e. don’t give anyone else the password!

Use Two-Factor Authentication

By setting up two-factor authentication, you need two separate forms of identification to gain access. The first factor is a password and the second might be a text code sent to your phone. (It’s like having two keys to your house, both kept in separate places).

From off-site data storage to anti-virus software to next generation firewalls - there are many ways to stay cyber safe. But unless you get the basics right it can all count for nothing.
